The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
