Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
